Formation Before Permission

As AI can do more of the work, what must your university still make sure humans learn to do?

AI can improve the product while weakening the human capability the work was meant to develop.

ReHuman helps institutions test one AI use at a time: what human capability, judgment, or relationship is this work supposed to form, what happens when AI does part of the work, and what follows from that for institutional design.

Choose your starting point

Faculty

When AI can produce the work, how will you know the learning still happened?

Start with one assignment, activity, or assessment and test what human exercise must remain visible.

Provosts

As AI expands across the institution, what must your university still make sure humans learn to do?

Start with an academic priority and test where AI strengthens learning, where it thins it out, and what must be protected.

Institutional decision-makers

What human judgment, responsibility, or relationship should your institution not delegate without knowing what is being lost?

Start with one live policy, program, or operational use case and map the decision through the same ReHuman logic.

The decision bridge
Strengthen Preserve / permit
Bypass Redesign
Replace + formative Preserve the human
Replace + non-formative Release the task
The point is not simply whether AI works. The point is what the institution must still keep meaningfully human.

First-Year Writing + Generative AI

One assignment. One specific AI use. Watch the decision move from human purpose to a defensible AI-use recommendation.

01
What is this work for?

Students should become more capable of reasoning, argument, evidence judgment, revision, and intellectual ownership.

Decision These are formative human capabilities.
02
What must students and faculty still actually do?

Students form the thesis, reason through evidence, make choices, and revise. Faculty designs the assignment, assesses reasoning, gives feedback, and exercises final judgment.

Decision Both student exercise and faculty judgment matter.
03
What exactly will AI do?

After the student creates a thesis and argument map, AI generates counterarguments for the student to evaluate.

Decision Test this use—not “AI” in general.
04
What happens to the human exercise?

The student still evaluates and decides. Faculty still sets purpose, assesses reasoning, and provides formative feedback.

Judgment Student: STRENGTHEN
Faculty: STRENGTHEN
05
What should we do with this AI use?

Because AI strengthens rather than bypasses or replaces the formative work, it can be permitted with boundaries.

ReHuman recommendation PRESERVE / PERMIT
06
What are the operating boundaries?

AI may: generate counterarguments and support idea testing. Humans must: own the thesis, reasoning, evidence judgment, assessment, feedback, and mentoring. Evidence: argument map, staged drafts, disclosure, reflection, critique, or oral defense.

Implementation Keep the essential human exercise real and visible.

Preserve / Permit

This First-Year Writing case lands on Preserve / Permit because the specific AI use strengthens rather than bypasses or replaces the formative work. Other cases can produce different decisions.

Not every case ends here.

Depending on what AI does to student exercise, faculty judgment, and the formative purpose of the work, the same Decision Map can lead to a different result.

Your turn

Try your own case.

Choose one real assignment, activity, policy, program, or AI use from your institution. You will name what the work is supposed to form, test whether AI strengthens, bypasses, or replaces the human exercise, and generate a provisional Preserve / Permit, Redesign, Preserve Human, or Release Task recommendation.

Your turn · Formation Before Permission

Now map one of your own.

Choose one assignment, activity, policy, program, or AI use. Test one specific use at a time; if the technology is doing materially different work, run a separate pass.

Selected path You are using the shared ReHuman decision flow.
Step 1 of 6
01 · What is this work for?

What should someone become more capable of because this work is done well?

Name the work and the human purpose before continuing.

02 · Name the human formation on both sides

What human capabilities, judgments, or relationships are you trying to protect or promote?

Do not name the artifact. Name what the learner and faculty member must actually exercise, develop, judge, or embody.

Student formation

Capacity the learner must exercise and develop.

If AI replaced this exercise, would something formative be lost?

Faculty formation / responsibility

Judgment, expertise, or relationship faculty must exercise.

If AI replaced this exercise, would something formative or accountable be lost?

Complete both formation fields and both formation-value checks.

03 · Name one specific AI use

What will AI actually do?

Test the use, not “ChatGPT” or “AI” in general. Examples: counterargument generation, outline generation, full drafting, feedback, grading, formatting.

Describe one specific AI use before continuing.

04 · Run the double formation test

What did AI do to the human exercise?

Strengthen: the human still exercises the essential capacity. Bypass: a meaningful step disappears. Replace: AI performs essential work in the human’s place.

Student effect

Assess what happens to the learner’s exercise.

Faculty effect

Assess what happens to faculty judgment, expertise, or relationship.

The decision bridge
StrengthenPreserve / permit

Replace + formativePreserve human
Replace + non-formativeRelease

Classify both effects and briefly explain why.

05 · Make and implement the formation decision
Derived from your formation test

—

Complete the prior steps to generate the recommendation.

Translate the decision into operating conditions.

The handout is not complete until the institution can say what AI may do, what humans must still do, and how meaningful human exercise will be visible.

Record AI May, Human Must, and Evidence Required before continuing.

06 · Run the governance guardrail

Formation analysis does not replace institutional requirements.

Review each area as Clear, Needs Review, or Not Applicable. Add a short note only where it helps the next person act.

Privacy / data Student, employee, research, or sensitive data exposure.
Security / approved tool Vendor approval, access controls, retention, authentication.
Accessibility Equivalent access, accommodations, usability, assistive technology.
Intellectual property Ownership, licensing, copyrighted inputs, authorship, attribution.
Accreditation Program, professional, clinical, licensure, or external standards.
Academic integrity Permitted use, disclosure, authorship, assessment validity.

Review all six governance areas and name a policy owner and next action.

Presence Gate

Does implementation involve care, formation, adjudication, witness, covenant, or another context where accountable human encounter is itself part of the value?

PersonhoodArtifact is not the person.
AnswerabilityHumans can explain consequential choices.
FormationProtect meaningful exercise of capacity.
PresenceSome value requires accountable human encounter.

The ReHuman frame

The question is not whether AI works. It is what the institution must keep human.

ReHuman extends the conversation beyond AI literacy, compliance, and governance into human formation: what persons and institutions must still be able to do, become, answer for, and embody.

Personhood

Representation is not the person.

Answerability

An answer is not enough; someone must remain answerable.

Formation

The artifact is not the formation.

Presence

Some value requires someone to show up.
