Formation Before Permission

Not every AI decision ends in preserve.

The ReHuman question is not “Is AI allowed?” The question is what AI does to the human capacity the institution is responsible to form. These three worked examples show when the better decision is to redesign or release.

Decision Examples

Three non-preserve decisions.

Each example follows the same ReHuman sequence: course purpose, student formation, faculty responsibility, specific AI use, double formation test, decision bridge, implementation, and evidence.

Redesign Release Double Formation Test

Worked Example 01

Intro Biology Lab Report + AI Data Interpretation

A student uses generative AI to interpret lab results, explain anomalies, and draft the discussion section before doing their own analysis.

DecisionRedesign

1 · Course Purpose

The lab report is not simply a polished scientific artifact. It forms observation, causal reasoning, evidence interpretation, and disciplined uncertainty.

2 · Student Formation

The student must become capable of moving from data to claim: noticing patterns, naming limits, explaining anomalies, and defending a cautious conclusion.

3 · Faculty Responsibility

Faculty must continue exercising assignment design, scientific judgment, feedback on reasoning, and discernment about whether the student understands the underlying method.

4 · Specific AI Use

AI is not merely checking grammar. It is generating the interpretation of findings, suggesting explanations, and drafting the discussion before the student has reasoned through the data.

Student Formation Test

The artifact may improve, but AI has supplied the central interpretive moves the lab exists to form.

Bypass

Faculty Formation Test

If faculty only grade the finished prose, AI can hide whether the student actually interpreted the data or merely submitted a convincing explanation.

Bypass

Decision bridge

Because the doing is formative and AI bypasses the interpretive work, the right answer is not a blanket ban or a hidden permission structure. Redesign the lab sequence so student reasoning is visible before AI support enters.

AI May

Help clarify prose after the student completes an initial interpretation; suggest possible alternative explanations for the student to evaluate; help format references or tables.

Human Must

Create the first claim-evidence-reasoning map; identify anomalies; name uncertainty; explain why one interpretation is stronger than another.

Evidence Required

Lab notebook entries, raw-data annotations, pre-AI interpretation paragraph, revised discussion with disclosure, and a brief reflection on what changed after AI feedback.

Governance Guardrail

Review for student data privacy, tool approval, lab-data confidentiality, accessibility, academic-integrity rules, disciplinary standards, and course-level AI disclosure requirements.

The goal is not to keep AI out of the lab report. It is to keep the student inside the act of scientific interpretation.

Facilitation Script

Ask faculty: What does this lab report form that a polished discussion section alone cannot prove? Then ask: where may AI improve the student's expression without doing the interpretation for them? The redesign point is simple: require visible reasoning before AI assistance.

ReHuman Lens Check

Use the same structure across the institution.

These cases are not templates for permission alone. They are examples of disciplined delegation: what to preserve, what to redesign, and what to release after the formation work is named.

Personhood

The artifact is not the student, and the output is not the whole person.

Answerability

Students and faculty must remain able to explain and defend consequential choices.

Formation

The product is not the formation. Protect the exercise that develops capacity.

Presence

Where feedback, care, or witness carries formative value, accountable human encounter matters.
