Theologian · Educator · Army Reserve Chaplain

I study how people develop judgment, moral agency, and responsibility—and how institutions shape those capacities in a changing technological world.

My work brings practical theology, law, leadership, and AI ethics into conversation with the lived demands of teaching, ministry, and institutional decision-making.

01 / Research agenda

Human formation is the connecting question.

What are people learning to become through the practices, technologies, and institutions they inhabit?

That question connects my work on Christian formation, public responsibility, attention, and artificial intelligence. I examine how institutions can support the exercise of human judgment and remain answerable for the consequences of their decisions.

Formation & moral agency

ReHuman

A developing research and applied framework examining personhood, answerability, formation, and presence in AI-mediated institutional life. It asks what human capacities a practice should develop and how AI changes their exercise.

The Mirror in the Machine

Compliance Discipleship and the Limits of Artificial Imitation

Examines what artificial imitation reveals about religious performance and human transformation. The argument develops “compliance discipleship” as a category for the appearance of faith without the relational demands of repentance, accountability, and embodied presence.

“Compliance discipleship” is a concept developed within this work.

The Discipline of Attention

Argues that the attention economy is a pastoral-theological problem with consequences for prayer, moral agency, and care. Drawing on Augustine, Simone Weil, and Thomas Merton, the essay develops attention as a discipline cultivated in community.

Books for wider audiences. InnerShift: Spiritual Care in the Age of Distraction (2014) addresses attention, formation, and human connection. Just Sayin’ (2025) explores relational clarity, identity, wisdom, and ethical decision-making. Together, they extend the work of formation beyond academic audiences.
